Requirements to Drive on University Business

State and CSU guidelines require that any University employee or volunteer who drives on University business must among other things:

  • Be 18 years of age or older, must have a valid California or other State driver’s license, and have not been issued more than three moving violations or have been responsible for more than three accidents (or any combination or more than three thereof) during the past twelve month period. The driver and all passengers in any vehicle driven on University business must wear a seat belt and all accidents must be reported to University Police or the Office of University Risk Management within 48 hours.
  • Submit an original completed AUTHORIZATION TO OBTAIN DRIVING RECORDS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES (INF 254) to University Police, UPD.

  • The AUTHORIZATION TO USE PRIVATELY OWNED VEHICLES ON STATE BUSINESS (STD 261) is only required if driving a private vehicle on University business. The original STD 261 is retained with the department supervisor and must be renewed every fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th).

  • The University on-line Defensive Driver Training must be completed once every four years.

Only University employees or volunteers may drive University vehicles.

To confirm that you have met these requirements or to update your records, use the following steps to access the Employee Training Center:


Requirements:

  1. Disable pop-up blockers
  2. Use Internet Explorer or Safari web browser (online training is not available on an iPad)

Logging in to check your status:

  1. Go to the CSUF Portal and login.
  2. Click on the Training tab (If you don’t see the training tab go to Profile tab, activate training tab by clicking the box and then refreshing the screen.)
  3. Click on the “My Training” link
  4. Click on the “My Training Requirements” link
  5. There will be a Learning Track titled Defensive Driver that includes the Defensive Driver online training, the STD261 and the INF254 form (Each of these should read “Finished” in green. If any of these items read "EXPIRED or NON-COMPLIANT" in red, you are not authorized and must update your records.)

Logging in for training:

  1. Go to the CSUF Portal and login
  2. Click on the Training tab (If you don’t see the training tab, go to the Profile tab, activate the training tab by clicking the box and then refreshing the screen.)
  3. Click on the “My Training” link
  4. Click on the ‘Course Catalog” link
  5. In the search box, type Defensive Driver and click Go to search
  6. Click on the yellow folder icon
  7. Click “Enroll” under the Action Column that coordinates to the Defensive Driver Training – Online class
  8. Click “Launch” to begin the training

Printing certificate of completion:

  1. Click on the “My Dashboard” link
  2. Scroll to completed Trainings section, click on the “Print” or “Email” link under the Certificate column for the Defensive Training - Online
