SUMMARY OF TYPES OF INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS

TWO TYPES OF APPROVED AGREEMENTS

  1. Letter of Intent/Memorandum of Understanding PDF file
(General in nature and does not commit University resources)

    • A statement of cooperation and goodwill between California State University, Fullerton, and an international institution (typically an educational institution or duly recognized governmental agency. May be a for-profit or non-profit, non governmental agency or community-based organization)
    • Typically contains wording about an "exchange of students and/or scholars (faculty)" and expresses an interest to "develop cooperative, collaborative projects."
    • May express interest in working together to develop a specific cooperative program
    • Requires signature of CSUF President and an appropriate level representative of the international institution/organization
    • Examples:
      • Universitas Diponegoro in Central Java, Indonesia
      • International Taxation Department, The State Administration of Taxation, China
      • Jin-Ai University in Fukui Prefecture, Japan
  2. International Agreement PDF file
(Specific and descriptive in nature and commits University resources)

Executes a defined project, product, or program such as:

    • Specific faculty or student exchange (number, discipline or length of time)
    • Short-term training
    • Degree program or selected credit courses
    • Commits to specific outcomes/deliverables and resources
    • Requires signature by CSUF President and an appropriate level representative of the international institution/organization
    • Examples:
      • Special Sessions Program Agreement
      • Study Abroad Agreement

NOTE:

Because there are many potential sources for international activities in various levels of “readiness” with a particular institution, the circumstances may call for one or both of the above. Some Letters of Intent may lead to a formalized agreement while others will stand alone. A proposal/routing document has been developed to further clarify the two distinct vehicles to be used and the appropriate internal approvals required for each.
